Fatboy uses natural and synthetic fabrics.
Natural fabrics are made from 100% natural yarns, like Stonewashed fabrics or our Pop of Color cotton collection. In general, natural fabrics are not suitable for outdoor use as they are sensitive to UV rays, water (salt or chlorine) and bleach. High quality outdoor materials must be stain, UV and mildew resistant. That's why our outdoor products are made from 100% synthetic yarn and fiber materials. All of these materials are weather resistant and can be used outdoors.
But what makes one fabric different from another? To help you out, we've compiled a list of the main properties of all the different fibers.
Nylon
At Fatboy, we have been using nylon for our Original bean bag for many years. Nylon is a strong synthetic material. It is wear resistant, and a special treatment makes it water and stain resistant. Nylon is easy to clean with soap and water. However, prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause some color fading.
Cotton and Stonewashed
We often use cotton fabrics for our indoor bean bags. A special finish is used to make them water and stain resistant so that they are easy to clean. This natural fabric is wear resistant, highly resistant to artificial and natural light, and reasonably UV resistant. Prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause some color fading.
Olefin
Olefin is a synthetic material made of polypropylene fibers. The fibers are dyed with a special solution during the production process, making the fabric colorfast. The solution also contains UV blockers to make them UV-resistant. Olefin fibers can be recycled into new products many times and its strength makes it hugely wear-resistant. Olefin is waterproof and mold-resistant. Don't worry if you spill some sunscreen - olefin is easy to clean (even with bleach).
Velvet
Our soft, shiny velvet fabric is made of synthetic polyester for indoor use. Velvet is exceptionally durable and retains its beautiful appearance for many years, making it perfect for heavy indoor use. The color change you see when you rub the fabric is one of its beautiful features. Velvet does not pilling or linting, our recycled version is even more durable. Velvet is easy to clean and maintain. A vacuum cleaner will do the trick with normal use. Stains can be removed with a damp cloth.
Sherpa
Our Sherpa fabric is made of polyester. This fabric is very soft to the touch and has a texture similar to shearling. Sherpa is a strong fabric that stays beautiful for years and is suitable for heavy domestic use. The fabric will not pilling or fluff. You can remove any stains with a damp cloth, but the cover can also be machine washed (up to 40° C). Our Sherpa fabric is available on The BonBaron and our Point Large.
Weave
Our Weave fabric is made of 82% polyester and 18% acrylic. Thanks to the FibreGuard technology, the fabric is stain resistant. In case of heavy spills, the fabric is easy to clean or machine wash (up to 40°C). This sturdy fabric will stay beautiful for years and is suitable for heavy residential use. You can find Weave on our Sumo sofa collection and Puff Weave cushions.
Teddy
Our Teddy fabric is made of synthetic polyester and is wonderfully thick, warm and super soft. Teddy gives a plush look and feel that lasts for many years, making it very suitable for heavy indoor use. The fabric will not pilling or linting. Stains can be removed with a damp cloth. Teddy fabric is only available with our Slim Teddy bean bag.
Polyester
Polyester is a synthetic material and Fatboy only uses a strong, high quality fabric. It does not wrinkle and is easy to clean. The fabric also receives a special finish that makes it water and stain resistant. However, prolonged exposure to sunlight may cause some color fading.
Recycled materials
We use recycled materials whenever possible. The Concrete Seat and Attackle, for example, are made from 100% recycled polyethylene. Sometimes, to achieve a really powerful combination, we mix recycled materials with other materials. Bakkes, for example, includes 20% recycled LLDPE, while 20% of the Paletti frame is recycled polypropylene.
